a very pleasant surprise
I read some reviews before deciding to opt for the Futuristix product. Some people reported severe difficulties and disappointment. However, for the relatively low price I decided to risk it and emailed the seller to check it would be happy with Windows 8, which they quickly confirmed it is.Having a bag full of old cassettes which I can no longer play, some of which are personal mementoes it was important to try to preserve the most important at least.I can report that as a 'senior' person in years who is far from an IT wizard, the system is straightforward with enclosed software that loads quickly. One is able to save tapes as MP3 or as I prefer WAV files. There are edit functions which I have not yet explored.I should say that I have not encountered the background noise problem so much complained of. This is certainly not Broadcast Quality equipment but hey...for 15 quid its much better than any reasonable person would expect. My only complaint is that I cannot hear the recording as it is being played in to the computer but find that plugging in a small mobile phone earpiece will at least enable me to hear faintly so as to know when to stop a piece or start it. All in all really fair value.

Useful but time consuming
I bought this as I have held on to the cassettes from my teenage years and wanted to convert them into a format that I can actually use, i.e. MP3.The converter works, though it does take time to get a whole tape converted and is a bit fiddly to select individual tracks, re-name, save as etc. However, the format you can save the files as is WAV. To convert the file into MP3 you have to download another bit of software, so again more time spent. I would recomend its use if you have both time and patience and also if you really can't get the cassette on CD already.

Disappointing
Easy to instal. Adjusting the computer's sound settings was fiddly, but the instructions were easy to follow, and the unit works fine. End of good news. The sound recorded on the computer is so full of hiss and crackle that the music is simply inaudible. This happens on every tape I have tried.Tweaking the audio controls on the software does not help. Substantial noise reduction reduces most (but not all) of the noise but distorts the sound. I have now given up. Fortunately, the line out enables me to play my tapes through my hi-fi system and to record them on to SD cards through my hi-fi. Not what I had hoped but it is a step forward and at least I hav'nt completely wasted my money.

Great item my dad was very happy with it :)
I bought this as a gift for my dad to convert all the hundreds of tapes he still has and he was very happy with it. I did have to help him set it up and the instructions are very difficult to follow/none existent but it works with Windows 7/8.1 and Windows 10 I can confirm. Very useful item for converting any tapes you may want to bring into the 21st century.

Eliminating the low hissing sound
This little machine worked the treat. The magic happens in the transfer/conversion to mp3 using the Audacity software(You can download the latest update as it's free). At the point of recording the tape(s) using the Audacity software, it produces a low hissing sound at interval b/w songs and through the song. This hissing sound can be eliminated completely using the audacity software noise removal effectFollow this instruction - Select a portion of the hissing sound - Effect - Noise Removal - Get Noise Profile. The dialog will close. Repeat the process again to pop up the dialog but this time move the indicator 1 step to the right that says 'More' then click on 'Remove Noise'. Ctrl + A to select entire recording then click on Effect, then on the option - 'Repeat Noise Removal Option'. Then 'Voiila' the low hissing sound has disappeared and you have a squeaking great sounding song. I hope this helps

Handy converter
The converter arrived safely and very quickly. I was fortuneate to have my son at home who helped me, although the instructions are very clear. Unfortuneately something about my computer wouldn't allow the sound to come through and it cost me £25 to call someone out to see to it. I now have a lot of learning to do but hopefully with a successful end

pc to mp3 converter
the cassette is fine but the software wont load on windows 7.and the software is freeware anyway.you can buy the cassette player cheaper on other sites.you also have to add another piece of software to the audacity to make it import mp3 format.
