Product Description Brightspark is fitted with 2 x 24W daylight bulbs The power of light Brightspark provides extra-bright levels of light from two special bulbs. It can be used to treat SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and sleep disorders, or to give anyone a mood, energy and concentration boost. Brightspark is a versatile lightbox for use at home or in the office, for reading or for working. Not many people realise how important bright light is. As the nights close in towards winter and the days become gloomy, many of us begin to feel more downbeat. For some it’s something we just accept: that we are more sluggish in the darker months, more tired at work, less happy overall. For others (estimated 1 in 4 in the UK) it is more serious – winter blues or more severe SAD syndrome can be crippling, making sufferers depressed, lethargic and unproductive. Luckily it doesn’t have to be like this. Light therapy is a readily available, scientific treatment that’s proven to help treat sufferers of SAD and the winter blues in a natural and healthy way. The science behind light therapy Numerous published studies have linked the lower levels of light in the autumn and winter to tiredness, overeating, low moods and social withdrawal. And they have found that in the darker days exposure to bright light – much brighter than normal home or office lighting – can make people feel alert, upbeat and energised. 79% of people are less productive or are less energised in winter View larger. Light therapy works by resetting your internal body clock. Your body clock, which tells you when to sleep and when to be awake, is controlled by a small group of cells at the back of the brain. These cells release hormones and other chemical messages to prepare the body for sleep or activity, based on how much strong, regular light is reaching the eye. This light is affected by irregular sleep routines, poorly-lit environments and low levels of light over the winter, meaning that we can feel sluggish even when we are supposed to be awake. Exposing ourselves to very bright light sends stronger signals to the brain that it is daytime. This makes us feel more awake during the day, and more ready for sleep at night. Low serotonin levels (a feature of depression) improve significantly with light therapy and the production of cortisol (which helps us to get up and go) increases. Bright light suppresses the production of the hormone melatonin, which tells the brain it is dark and therefore time to sleep. In the darker winter months, or inside dimly lit rooms, low light levels may not provide a sufficient signal to stop melatonin being produced. A lightbox can change this. Who is Brightspark for? Brightspark is a sleek lightbox whose slim design and small footprint makes it ideal for use at work or home. The high dose of light provided by Brightspark is ideal for teenagers and adults who struggle to get up in the mornings or and can help them reset their circadian rhythms (internal body clock), making them feel refreshed and brighter during the day, and more ready to sleep well at night. It helps people whose energy drops at work, in the afternoons or when they are doing nightshifts, by supplying them extra light as a much healthier pick-me-up than another cup of coffee. It also is perfect for those who miss the light of summer and suffer from the winter blues or the more serious SAD. Many SAD sufferers have found that bright lights make a big difference to their lives. Lux levels from Lumie’s lightboxes are independently verified View larger. Look out for lux levels Light from Brightspark has a brightness level of 10,000 lux at 20cm. Lux is a measurement of brightness as the light reaches your eye. Genuine SAD lightboxes should tell you their lux level and the distance at which it is achieved (and this distance should be a natural one for sitting next to the lightbox – 5cm would be impractical!). Brightspark’s lux level has been independently tested and verified. Even the brightest office offers about 500 lux whereas Brightspark provides 10,000 lux. Brightspark lightbox is a certified medical device Brightspark is certified to the Medical Devices Directive EC93/42. As a medical device, it conforms to European manufacturing standards and carries the correct CE mark. All Lumie lightboxes and SAD lights have been designed according to the results of relevant clinical trials and come with clear guidelines for correct medical usage. Our lamps are independently tested to confirm that they emit an only negligible amount of UV light – much less than normal daylight, which means that they are completely safe. Lumie, the light therapy specialists When you invest in a lightbox make sure it comes from a specialist, experienced company. Brightspark is made by Lumie, the Cambridge-based company who specialise in light therapy products – and nothing else. Lumie invented the integrated dawn simulator (sunrise alarm) back in 1993. Working with the scientific community and gaining vital customer feedback over the years, they have developed the concepts into the best-selling Bodyclock range, as well as applying their specialist knowledge to create other devices for health issues such as SAD, jet lag and acne. They now sell a full range of SAD light boxes, SAD lamps, light alarm clocks and acne lamps. Indications Designed to help with Seasonal Affective Disorder, and winter blues. Fantastic
This is the main light weapon in my war against SAD and depression esp during winter and is now part of my daily regime. After waking in the morning and feeding the cat & taking my meds i sit in front of this angel like light for 30 mins with my breakfast and it charges me up to face the day . Its impact has been v rapid with a noticeable difference after first week - so much so that i actually was looking forward to getting to work on a Monday morning after a miserable dark weekend. As the evenings are drawing in ( esp if i have a long day on road) again i sit in front of this for another 30 mins in evening. Noticeable differences have been noted by friends in that i seem happier and i feel a lot more productive both in house and at work.If you have depression and SAD this is not a sole solution but i do believe that its a valuable part of my proactive stance in controlling and managing my depression.Although these lights are not cheap ( I also have portable SAD device, home office SAD desk lamp & daylight sunrise clock ) i see this as an investment in maintaining a life balance that i can control and also in keeping my job ( in past two and half years i have had over 6 months off work with depression and anxiety ) . Obviously its not going to stop you having some days when depression gets upper hand ....but i would rather it be the occassional day rather than weeks and months. Making these lights part of my regime each day are definitely paying dividends.

I bought this for my wife who suffers from SAD I don't now how successful it really is
I bought this for my wife who suffers from SADI don't now how successful it really is, but she likes it so that's all that matters. It gives a nice light for close up work or reading, so even if you don't want it for SAD it is a good product for specific lighting.I can't give it 5 stars as its really sold for SAD and I suspect you have to sit very close to it to gain the advantage but it is probably as good, if not better, than most other things I have looked at for the same purpose. - perhaps 4 and a half stars :-)

Great light, poor quality of the plastic box
I really like the light this lamp emits and also the shape of the lamp but the workmanship leaves a lot to be desired. It's done on the cheap side - the plastic part covering the front part of the lamp will get twisted with time and won't slide in the grove properly. After removing this plastic part, you can see the wires exposed and the part of the lamp that holds the bulb in place will get stuck in about two years and you will then need to replace the whole lamp simply because the replacement bulb won't click in place properly and won't do the job... Over the years, I have purchased 5 or 6 these lamps and all of them were exactly how I described. I keep buying them as I like the light they emit and the shape but am not pleased with the quality of the plastic parts of the lamp. Also, the bulbs need to be replaced more often than any other lamp I have ever owned - so in the long run, it is quite a pricey purchase for what it is...

Wish I'd bought one of these years ago.
I was diagnosed with SAD by a doctor several years ago and bought a large, unsightly and heavy lightbox because there wasn't any other choice in the UK at the time. I never got on well with it and was wary of getting another for years. Finally I caved in and bought a Lumie Brightspark in 2011. I wish I'd done it earlier, because it's a big improvement. It looks fine and due to the integrated handle at the top easy to move position. It's not too heavy either. I have it on a shelf close to my desk and the light is cheering on dark mornings without being so overpowering that you can't see the computer screen. I used it most days in winter and it staved off most of the depression and lethargic feelings I normally get at that time of year.My one criticism is that the rounded case means it tilts upwards slightly if on its side, and it's supposed to be more therapeutic if you're getting the light angled downward. If I use it on a shelf I need to wedge something underneath it, which isn't all that stable. So I usually end up just using it upright instead. Still, it's minor and I'd only knock off half a star for that, so overall I give it 5 stars.

Larger than expected, consider if you can use it regularly enough
I tend to be pretty down in the winter months, and believe this to be a consequence of the lack of light, sun and warmth here in the UK. After a recent trip abroad to the Far East where I was much happier and brighter, the return to home after a few months led me to become tired and depressed again. I decided to try a couple of things rather than wallow in my sadness - a Lumie Brightspark Lightbox, and taking Vitamin D regularly. The great thing about this product is that it comes with a money-back guarantee, so you can trial whether it works for you or not (at least it does on the Lumie site, but Amazon's returns policy means that you can do broadly the same if you buy it here at a slightly lower cost). It's also very bright - but not in a way that gives you headaches. I was able to sit next to for hours at a time, leaving it on and not suffering at all. Actually as a work/desk lamp, it functions incredibly well. The downside for me was the size of the product. It feels huge, perhaps even larger than the photo suggests. I did manage to find a space for it on my desk, but not everyone might be so lucky.Unfortunately, I did end up sending the product back for a refund. I believe that this is the type of light that benefits from being used every day (in fact that is recommended), but with getting up to commute into town for work at least half of the week, it was't always possible to do this, and I didn't want to have to sit next to it in the evenings and have it potentially interfere with getting to sleep. So, my advice is to check the size of the product, consider if you have room for it, and consider whether you can use it every day. If you tick all of those boxes, this could be a great buy for the winter blues.

Just what I need!
The light has defiantly helped me get through the winter months. I suffer badly from the winter blues and I use the light first thing in the morning and sometimes in the late afternoon when I feel a little low. This product is great, you will not regret purchasing one.Arrived quicklyTall large lightDoes not look out of place on my bedside table.
