A beautiful book - informative and entertaining
This is a short book of around 175 pages, and with many of them beautiful illustrations. The illustrations really do add to the narrative, with many photographs of historic paintings and drawings and of the country today. The narrative is brilliantly written. It is very entertaining, sometimes stirring emotions, always informative. I recently read another excellent book by Alistair Moffat which led me to this one. I imagine I will read more still. The final pages give a little potted history of each of the Highland clans, and I was of course thrilled to see my clan, Clan Donnachaidh, there with a lovely anecdote from Prestonpans, as well as mentioned in the narrative as part of the Atholl Brigade who, with so many other clans, charged and fought bravely, but in vain, on Drumossie MoorThis book, although a paperback, is beautifully produced on high quality paper and is a joy to have as well as to read.

An excellent and very revealing book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it has informed me more about the history of the rise and fall of the clan system in Scotland than many other titles I have read. Absolutely fascinating! If you are Scottish and are interested in the origin of your own name/clan or want a bit of Scottish history that is not all about Kings and wars with England then this is a must read. One warning, depending on your own clan you may find yourself casting a critical eye towards people you know with other certain last names...someone once said that the Scots loved a war, and if at any time they wern't taking part in one then they would usually turn to fighting amongst themselves!

The Highland Clans by Alistair Moffatt
I purchased the book 'The Highland Clans' for my husband's birthday. We went to Dunoon 3years ago and whilst we were there he was on the look out for an interesting book on the Scottish Clans but did'nt find exactly what he was looking for. The synopsis about the book on the Amazon website was enough to spark an interest, on receipt of the book I'm pleased to say we are both delighted with it. My husband has read the book from cover to cover, keeps it by his side to pick up again and again. The book touches on many historic Great names & events; including the fierce and fateful Battle of Culloden in 1746. Alistair Moffatt has enlightened our knowledge of History and Highland Clans of Scotland. The Scottish people are renowned for their ancient culture, heroic spirit, family roots, a proud nation of people imbued by traditions and the magnificent landscape of the Highlands. This book is a must for anyone interested in the History of Scotland,it is well illustrated and most informative, we are giving you an unbiased review and like most historic books you will always find someone who will disagree with some aspect of the history. We strongly recommend this book whether your roots are in Scotland or not we also found you do not get burdened down with academic jargon with all due respect.

Non-Fiction
As a member of Clan Anderson, and which I believe is a Cadet Clan from Clan MacAndrew, I was interested in finding out about where my clan originated...I was pleasantly surprised that this book is an excellent history of Scotland book. I completed a Level Three Degree Award in Mediaeval and Early Modern Scotland c.1100-1707 via the University of Dundee School of Humanities in 2014, and found that this book filled in the parts which weren't covered in the University Module.I would like to thank Alistair Moffat for taking the time to write this excellent book, and for including all of the interesting pictures. My wife, and our two West Highland White Terriers are returning to Scotland for two weeks next August, where we shall be visiting many of the places mentioned in this superb book.

The brutality between the Clans
The book was very informative and I was surprised how brutal the clans were against each other. I just can't imagine the pain suffered by individuals who were left to bleed out.

Good Read
This is a really good book. I usually nod off if I try to read historical books, but this one is so well written, that I don't. If you are into history of Scotland or the clans, this book is for you. I am a descendent of the Scott clan but unfortunately they are not mentioned. It doesn't matter. This is a really good book and I'm glad I bought it. It will make a good reference book in the future.

To know the life of the Highlanders.
This such a Beautifully made book. Keepsake. Pictures are good. I love learning the history & facts as they are known of the Highland clans people. It is a slow read for me. It is history! But I relish every bit of learning who these people were & what their lives were like back then.

A must-have for anyone with ancestors from Scotland.
I got so involved in this book I read it from cover to cover in just under 3 days. It is a great book about the clans of Scotland. Full of feeling and some sadness. I can now do further research from the full list of the clans in the final chapter. Excellent.
